‘ഏഷ്യയിലെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ കൗമാരമേള’ എന്നാണ് കേരള സ്കൂൾ കലോത്സവത്തിന് വർഷങ്ങളായി മാധ്യമങ്ങൾ നൽകിയിട്ടുള്ള ഉഗ്രൻ വിശേഷണം. കേരള സംസ്ഥാന രൂപീകരണത്തിന് തൊട്ടടുത്ത മാസം തന്നെ, 1956-ൽ അന്നത്തെ വിദ്യാഭ്യാസ ഡയറക്ടറായ ജി.എസ്. വെങ്കിടേശ്വരയ്യർ ഡൽഹിയിലെ അന്തർസർവ്വകലാശാല കലോത്സവത്തിൽനിന്ന് പ്രചോദിതനായാണ് സംസ്ഥാന സ്കൂൾ കലോത്സവം രൂപകല്പന ചെയ്തത് എന്നാണ് കലോത്സവചരിത്രം പറയുന്നത്. അന്നുതൊട്ട് ആദ്യകാലത്ത് ഒരു ദിവസം മാത്രമായി നടത്തപ്പെട്ടിരുന്ന മേള പിന്നീട് മത്സരഇനങ്ങൾ വർധിച്ചുവർധിച്ച് 4-5 ദിവസങ്ങളിലായി സംസ്ഥാനത്തെ മുഴുവൻ വിദ്യാലയങ്ങളെയും ഉൾക്കൊള്ളുന്ന മഹാമേളയായിത്തീർന്നു.
നിലവിൽ 15,000- ത്തോളം കുട്ടികൾ പങ്കെടുക്കുന്ന, 24 വേദികളിലായി 249 മത്സരയിനങ്ങളുള്ള, ഉത്സവസമാനമായ അന്തരീക്ഷമാണ് കേരള സ്കൂൾ കലാമേളയ്ക്കുള്ളത്.
2018- ൽ മത്സര ഇനങ്ങൾക്കുള്ള മാർഗ്ഗനിർദ്ദേശങ്ങളടങ്ങിയ പരിഷ്കരിച്ച കലോത്സവ മാന്വലിറങ്ങിയപ്പോൾ അതിന്റെ ആമുഖമായി താഴെക്കൊടുത്തിരിക്കുന്ന വാക്യങ്ങളെഴുതിച്ചേർത്തിരുന്നു:
